Howdy Creative curated "Losheng at Yang Ming," Losheng Sanatorium's first exhibition beyond its own grounds, for National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, recreating its wooden corridor to carry a century of spatial memory through the show.

Challenge

Losheng Sanatorium carries a century of scars from Taiwan's history of Hansen's disease care. This was Losheng's first exhibition held off-site, so the core challenge was recreating the sanatorium's distinct atmosphere inside a university arts center, accurately conveying that history and countering stigma, without turning suffering into spectacle.

Goal

NYCU's Center for the Arts wanted more than an artifact display. It wanted an exhibition that could spark public dialogue, bringing Losheng's human rights history off the sanatorium grounds and into campus and society, while carrying oral histories, medical artifacts, and the preservation movement through spatial design.

Approach

  1. Recreated Losheng Sanatorium's wooden corridor inside the exhibition space as the spine connecting the admission, medical, daily-life, and resistance sections.
  2. Installed a sound piece of residents' oral histories, so visitors hear first-person accounts as they walk the corridor.
  3. Designed an interactive stamp-collecting "exam card" and a recreated resident dwelling, giving visitors physical, participatory ways to engage rather than only viewing.
  4. Presented resident portraits on photographic scrolls hung like human silhouettes, giving the historical narrative real, tangible human weight.

Outcome

"Losheng at Yang Ming," the sanatorium's first exhibition beyond its own grounds, opened on schedule. Recreating the wooden corridor and pairing it with a sound installation, an interactive exam card, and a recreated dwelling turned the sanatorium's history into an immersive experience visitors could walk through and engage with directly.
