When Hakka Spirit Meets Basketball: An Unexpected Cross-Genre Exhibition

Challenge

The story of Hakka village basketball teams stretches back generations, but the surviving material was mostly text and old photographs, making it hard for younger audiences to connect. A straightforward timeline-and-panel exhibition risked flattening the story into passive reading, losing the on-court intensity of coaches and players and the tenacious spirit that defines Hakka village life.

Goal

The Hakka Affairs Council wanted the exhibition to be more than a historical retrospective, an event that could bring the community together around a shared identity. The goal was to make the seedling spirit something visitors could feel physically, with spatial design and visual identity that would draw in families and younger audiences to discover the story of Hakka basketball villages.

Approach

1. The key visual captured the motion and energy of basketball while working in the understated colors and textures of Hakka culture, setting the identity tone for the whole exhibition.
2. Multimedia interactive installations and recreated scenes rebuilt the training grounds and game-day intensity of coaches and players inside the exhibition space.
3. The circulation was designed around finding a shared spirit, guiding visitors from historical context step by step into the concrete stories behind that seedling spirit.

Outcome

The exhibition delivered a complete key visual, spatial plan, and set of interactive installations built around the Hakka village basketball story, translating that local history into a walkthrough experience. It now stands as a permanent exhibition for the Hakka Affairs Council's work on regional cultural identity, carrying the seedling spirit forward as a piece of local memory.
