The Long-Term Value of Brand Design: Good Design Doesn't Age | HappyPet
HappyPet's brand identity went through three generations of evolution. Howdy Creative led the first and third generations, extending the identity into packaging, merchandise, and storefront applications while keeping brand recognition consistent over the long run.
Challenge
HappyPet went through three generations of brand identity. A mid-cycle redesign shifted direction but failed to carry forward the recognition the original identity had built, forcing repeated design investment in packaging and merchandise every time the look changed. The brand needed an identity system built to last, not one it would have to redesign again.
Goal
The goal was to re-establish an identity system for HappyPet that could extend cleanly into packaging, merchandise, and storefront applications and hold up over the long term, while confirming that the original design's core elements still fit the brand's positioning, so HappyPet wouldn't keep paying to redesign itself from scratch.
Approach
- We revisited the core elements of the first-generation identity and reassessed which visual language still fit HappyPet's brand positioning today.
- The third-generation design kept the recognizable features of the original identity while refining a complete set of application rules for packaging and merchandise.
- Logo, color, and packaging guidelines were unified to keep brand recognition consistent across different product sizes and materials.
Outcome
HappyPet's third-generation identity carried forward the core visual elements of the first generation and shipped with a complete set of packaging application guidelines, keeping brand recognition consistent over the long term without a full identity overhaul, and saving the cost and time of re-planning the whole system.
