Engineering Is Fun: A Hands-On Engineering Market at National Taiwan University

Event Planning

Howdy Creative planned the "Engineering Is Fun Market" for the Yen Ching-Ling Industrial Development Foundation, held outside NTU's College of Engineering museum. Booths from mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering departments, paired with a stamp rally, gave young students a hands-on way to discover engineering fields.

Challenge

Engineering can feel abstract and inaccessible to young students. The Foundation wanted a market event that would bring mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering departments out of the classroom and into an approachable, hands-on format. The challenge was integrating booth content from multiple engineering units into an experience that let students try things themselves while still conveying what made each department distinct.

Goal

Plan an event combining market booths and hands-on workshops outside NTU's College of Engineering museum, with activities like block assembly, race car challenges, and drone piloting running throughout, and a stamp-rally reward system to encourage students to visit every engineering booth and engage with different fields firsthand.

Approach

  1. Invited mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering units to host booths, each designing their own hands-on activities and materials for students to try.
  2. Designed a stamp-rally reward system linking ten booths, from ride experiences to 3D printing demos, to increase students' motivation to visit every booth.
  3. Located the event outside NTU's College of Engineering museum, drawing additional foot traffic from visitors to the concurrent "Walking with M.E." exhibition.

Outcome

The "Engineering Is Fun Market" ran successfully outside NTU's College of Engineering museum. Booths from mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering units, along with the stamp rally, drew a large turnout of students and families, giving young people a concrete, hands-on understanding of engineering fields.

FAQ

How do you make a STEM or engineering-themed market feel approachable rather than academic?
We break down technical content into hands-on booth activities and pair them with visual design that speaks the language of young students, so engineering knowledge is experienced through play rather than one-way panel displays.
What should organizers plan for when running a market event on a university campus?
Campus venues usually come with traffic flow, crowd control, and scheduling constraints. We confirm site conditions early, plan zoned circulation, and coordinate execution details with the school and sponsoring foundation to keep the day running smoothly.
