A Fortune Dragon for the New Year: Reviving Dragon Scales in a Red Packet

Challenge

Plenty of red packets are on the market, but few are genuinely built around a cultural concept at the structural level. Most get used once and thrown away, losing the blessing they were meant to carry, with little design thought given to something people would actually want to keep and handle again.

Goal

Howdy Creative wanted to break the disposable-envelope mold and design a Year-of-the-Dragon red packet that was both an art object and a functional one, something that could be kept as a keepsake while still working as an everyday envelope for cash gifts.

Approach

1. Built a folding envelope structure around the dragon motif, so unfolding it reveals the dragon's full silhouette and dimensional layering.
2. Used die-cut dragon-scale texture to reinforce that dimensionality, turning the fold itself into the packet's main visual draw.
3. Designed six internal card slots to hold bills of different denominations, balancing festive symbolism with everyday practicality.
4. Combined gold foil stamping with color print to give the packet a finish worth keeping long after the New Year.

Outcome

The Fortune Dragon red packet's structure and finishing were completed, combining folding craft with real storage function. It has become one of Howdy Creative's signature Lunar New Year products, balancing artistry and utility while carrying the holiday's blessing forward.
