Howdy Creative curated the 'Local Craft Evolution' exhibition for NTCRI, condensing a year of hands-on mentorship across 44 communities into a laboratory-styled spatial narrative.

Challenge

The mentorship program worked with 44 communities through in-depth design workshops and on-site diagnostics, guiding them from traditional craft techniques toward innovative design. The hardest part was turning that invisible year-long evolution into something visitors could actually perceive. A straightforward display of finished pieces could not tell the story behind them.

Goal

The goal went beyond simply showing results. The exhibition needed to work as a communication tool that clearly told the public and media that 'rural craft is evolving,' making the outcomes of design mentorship visible and proving the program's value.

Approach

  1. Framed the exhibition around a laboratory concept, using an all-white space filled with beakers and petri dishes to hold raw craft materials.
  2. Organized the main Nantou venue into three thematic zones: Earth (ceramic relief), Nature (botanical dye), and Treasures (weaving).
  3. Set up a dedicated 'Cross-Media Lab' zone and invited ceramic artist Liu Yu-Chi to create on site, deepening the exhibition's experimental spirit.
  4. Extended the curatorial concept into the opening press conference with a 'Craft Evolution Magic Show,' folding persimmon-dyed coasters and other craft pieces into a magic performance.

Outcome

The 'Local Craft Evolution' exhibition opened on schedule at the main Nantou venue, with the Earth, Nature, and Treasures zones and the Cross-Media Lab all fully realized as planned. The opening press conference, paired with the Craft Evolution Magic Show, drew media attention and made a year of craft mentorship across 44 communities concretely visible.
