From Mascot to Merchandise: Designing and Producing the Qingshan Snail

Challenge

Qingshan Snail needed a mascot that could actually go into production, not just a character sketch, but something that could be made into a real plush toy and extended into merchandise like a tote bag. The design had to satisfy both the character's likability and the factory's manufacturing feasibility at the same time.

Goal

Design an endearing, highly recognizable snail plush mascot with a clearly defined color scheme, light green shell, cream body, blush detailing, and plan how the plush would pair with a tote bag, letting the plush hang from the bag's handle as a wearable accessory, while preparing a production-ready four-view blueprint for the factory to sample and quote from.

Approach

1. Locked in the character design: a light-green spiral shell, cream-colored body, antennae, and blush marks, aiming for a soft, comforting feel, and drew front, side, top, and back views for the plush factory's sampling reference.
2. Designed the tote bag accessory: a print pattern built from a dotted trail suggesting the snail's path and plant line art, letting the plush hang from the bag's handle as a "plush plus tote" combined accessory.
3. Marked out real production dimensions, a 320mm x 300mm tote bag and a 120mm plush attachment point, among others, giving the factory clear specifications to sample from.
4. Coordinated with plush toy and canvas tote sampling vendors, securing sample and bulk-production quotes and confirming the production schedule and cost details.

Outcome

The Qingshan Snail plush mascot's character design and production-ready four-view blueprint are finalized, along with the matching tote bag accessory design, and vendor sample and bulk quotes are in hand, putting the project in position to move into actual sampling and production according to schedule.
