Starting From Hand and Star: Soul Island Coffee's Brand Identity Design

Brand Identity

Soul Island Coffee (心島心靈咖啡) is a Southeast Asian-inspired cafe built around the idea of healing, and needed a full brand foundation before opening. Howdy Creative built the brand mark from the image of a hand meeting a star, then set the color palette and usage guidelines.

Challenge

Soul Island Coffee's brand is built around the idea that coffee is a ritual and relaxation is a choice, carrying the natural warmth of Southeast Asia. But early on, the cafe had no complete brand visuals in place. The logo had no usage guidelines and was hard to extend into new applications. The website was handled as a separate project.

Goal

The goal was a brand identity that captured healing, nature, and ritual, backed by complete color and logo usage guidelines, so the brand foundation could extend consistently into the website and digital channels that would follow.

Approach

  1. Defined the direction using brand keywords (healing, nature, Southeast Asian atmosphere, stillness, ritual, inner exploration) alongside a palette of deep brown, sand, tropical green, warm gold, and off-white, then presented two mood directions, tropical nature and healing minimalism, for the client to align on.
  2. Presented three logo proposals, then finalized the mark after two rounds of refinement: an oval emblem built from a hand cupping a star and points of light, symbolizing the ability to rediscover time alone with yourself at Soul Island, backed by a complete color palette and logo usage guidelines.
  3. The website and LINE official account design were handled as a separate project; see the website design case study for details.

Outcome

Soul Island Coffee went from nothing to a complete brand identity system: the hand-and-star brand mark, color palette, and application guidelines were all finished and delivered on schedule. Since launch, Howdy Creative has continued supporting Soul Island's growth with SEO content marketing services.

FAQ

Does cafe brand identity design include the website and LINE official account?
It depends on what the client needs. For Soul Island Coffee, Howdy Creative first delivered the brand identity, the logo, color palette, and usage guidelines, so the website and LINE official account rich menu that followed (handled as a separate project) could build on a consistent foundation.
Should a newly opening cafe start with brand identity design first?
Yes. Setting the brand identity early gives the website, menu, and social visuals that follow a consistent foundation to build on, avoiding a scattered result that needs reworking later. In the long run, that actually saves money.
