Forged by Fire: Baolai Kiln's Wood-Fired Ceramics Exhibition Brand
Exhibition DesignEnvironmental GraphicsBrand Identity
Southern Blaze is a brand exhibition built around Baolai Kiln's wood-fired ceramics. At the Suai-a-ka Cultural Commons in Kaohsiung, Howdy Creative used the imagery of flame to connect the work of seven wood-firing artists with Baolai Ceramics, building a complete curatorial visual system from exhibition identity through to on-site installation.
Challenge
The beauty of wood-fired ceramics lives in the accidental marks a kiln's flame leaves behind, and each of the seven participating artists brings a distinct style and level of craft. The core challenge was helping visitors, within one exhibition space, understand how the character of Baolai Kiln shapes each artist's individual work, while pulling these separate, personal practices together into one memorable brand exhibition.
Goal
Develop a wood-fired ceramics brand identity built around the image of flame, one that could run consistently through the key visual, exhibition wayfinding, artwork labels, and spatial installations, elevating Baolai Kiln's wood-firing craft from a local skill into a contemporary aesthetic brand while keeping each artist's creative context clearly visible.
Approach
- Designed the Southern Blaze exhibition identity around flame-line motifs on a deep blue ground, extending it across the entrance hanging scrolls, wayfinding signage, and artwork labels.
- Created a unified artist and artwork profile format for the seven wood-firing artists and Baolai Ceramics, letting visitors grasp each creator's background and the brand story at a glance.
- Planned the exhibition route and installations on-site at Suai-a-ka Cultural Commons, including transparent double-sided hanging scrolls, window decals, and display platforms, so the craft exhibition sat naturally within the venue's existing character.
Outcome
Southern Blaze: Baolai Kiln Wood-Fired Ceramics Exhibition opened on schedule at Suai-a-ka Cultural Commons. The flame-driven visual identity carried the seven artists' work and Baolai Ceramics' brand story clearly through the same exhibition space, leaving Baolai Kiln's wood-firing craft with a reusable brand visual system going forward.
