- Bilingual identity design is not translation. The two scripts have different optical weights and spacing behaviour.

Putting Chinese and English on the same identity is a design problem before it is a language problem. Handled as translation, it produces layouts where one script always looks like an afterthought.
This explains what actually differs between the two scripts and how we resolve it in practice.
Why is bilingual design not just translation?
Because the scripts do not behave the same way on the page. Chinese characters sit on a fixed square em with uniform width and high stroke density. Latin letters vary in width, sit on a baseline with ascenders and descenders, and are visually lighter at the same point size.
Set at the same size, a line of Chinese will look heavier and darker than a line of English. Matching them optically means the two are almost never at the same nominal size, which is the first thing translation based workflows get wrong.
What are the main technical differences?
Four differences drive most bilingual layout decisions: character width, vertical metrics, line length, and punctuation width.
- Width: Chinese characters are uniform width. Latin is proportional. A centred bilingual lockup will look off centre unless adjusted optically rather than mathematically.
- Vertical metrics: Chinese characters fill their em box; Latin type sits on a baseline with space above and below. Aligning them by their bounding boxes produces a visible vertical offset.
- Line length: the same content is typically far shorter in Chinese. A company name of four characters may become six or seven English words.
- Punctuation: Chinese punctuation is full width and carries its own spacing. Mixing full width and half width punctuation in one line creates uneven rhythm.
The line length difference is the one that reshapes layouts. On a business card it means a Chinese name may occupy a third of the width of its romanised equivalent, so a layout balanced for one will be unbalanced for the other.
How should a bilingual logotype be built?
Design the primary script first, then build the secondary script to match it optically rather than dimensionally. Lock the relationship as a fixed pair, and specify it as a single asset.
Matching optically means adjusting size, weight and letter spacing until the two read with equal presence, then measuring the result and recording it. The recorded numbers will not be round, and that is expected.
The relationship should then be treated as one asset rather than two elements that anyone can rearrange. Without that rule, the bilingual lockup drifts as different people rebuild it. This is exactly the kind of rule that belongs in written brand guidelines, as described in our brand design guide.
How should a bilingual business card be laid out?
Give each language its own side. Both then get a complete, uncompromised layout, and the sender presents the appropriate side when handing the card over.
Splitting a single side between two languages forces both to shrink, and the smaller of the two usually ends up below comfortable reading size. On a surface as small as 90×54mm there is not enough room for two full information hierarchies.
If a single side is unavoidable, treat one language as primary at full size and the other as a clearly subordinate layer at a smaller size and lower contrast. Attempting equal treatment on one side produces two compromised hierarchies rather than one good one.

Which language should lead?
Decide deliberately and apply it consistently. The primary language should be the one used by the audience the asset is for, which means it can differ between assets within the same identity.
A card used mainly in Taiwan leads in Chinese. The same company’s export catalogue leads in English. This is not inconsistency, provided the rule is stated: the lead language follows the audience, and the visual system stays constant.
What does cause problems is leaving it undecided. Assets then default to whatever the person producing them preferred, and the identity reads differently depending on who made each piece.
What about typeface pairing?
Chinese and Latin typefaces are separate files and must be paired deliberately. The pairing should match in stroke contrast, terminal treatment and apparent weight, not in name or nominal weight.
A Latin typeface labelled Regular paired with a Chinese typeface labelled Regular will rarely look balanced, because the weight naming conventions are independent. Judge by appearance at the actual sizes used.
Two practical constraints apply. Chinese typefaces contain thousands of glyphs, so files are large and web loading needs subsetting. And licence terms for Chinese typefaces are often structured differently from Latin ones, which matters when the licence has to be held by the client. Licensing is covered in design file handoff.
Frequently asked questions
Should the English name be a translation or a transliteration?
It depends on whether the Chinese name carries meaning that matters. A transliteration preserves the sound and the connection to the Chinese name; a translation preserves meaning but may sound unnatural. Many companies use a transliteration for the legal name and a translated descriptor alongside it. This is a positioning decision rather than a design one, and should be settled before the logotype is built.
Do we need separate brand guidelines for each language?
No. One document covering both is better, because the relationship between the two scripts is itself a rule that needs recording. Separate documents tend to drift apart.
Does Traditional or Simplified Chinese change the design?
It can. Traditional characters have more strokes and higher density, so they need slightly more size and spacing to remain legible at small sizes. If both are required, check the logotype and the smallest text sizes in each rather than assuming one setting works for both.
How does this affect a website rather than print?
The same optical issues apply, with the addition of font loading. Chinese web fonts are large, so subsetting to the characters actually used is usually necessary. Line height also needs separate values per language, since Chinese generally requires more leading than Latin at the same size.
