The Philosophy of Exhibitions

A good exhibition keeps affecting its audience long after they leave.

Taiwan's craft energy has never been lacking. What is often missing is a space that knows how to tell its story.

When Howdy Creative curates an exhibition, we do not simply place objects inside glass cases. What we do is find the question behind every piece of craft, then translate that question into a space visitors can feel the moment they walk in.

This translation ability was forged through our design practice since 2009. From brand identity to spatial storytelling, from exhibitor documents to the opening-day experience, curation is the stage where we bring everything together.

Austronesian Exchange

Taitung, at the
Crossroads

2024 Taitung Craft and Austronesian International Exchange Curatorial Marketing Project

The Taitung County Government commissioned Howdy Creative for this project. Taitung's distinctiveness lies in being the part of Taiwan closest to the Austronesian cultural sphere — the craft techniques of Indigenous peoples here carry deep historical ties to Austronesian communities across the Pacific.

Our approach starts from commonality: crafts from different ethnic groups often face similar questions — how to work with materials, how to make an object durable, how to let beauty become part of daily life. From this angle, Taitung's craft and the crafts of other Austronesian regions gain real grounds for dialogue, rather than simply being exotic displays sharing the same space.

Commonality is the most important entry point for cross-cultural curation — not putting differences on display side by side, but finding the shared question behind those differences.

Brand Identity

Seventy Years of Craft:
A brand's rediscovery of itself

National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute Brand Identity Enhancement Project

Seventy years is a milestone, and also a difficult design question: how do you make seventy years more than just a number, but an accumulation with warmth?

Our strategy was to build historical depth through visual language — giving the craft vocabulary of every era its place, while keeping the overall identity contemporary. A seventy-year-old brand should not look old; it should look grounded.

The core of a visual upgrade for an established brand is not to look younger, but to make its inner strength visible.

Local Craft

In the mountain town of Liugui,
a wood-fired kiln

Southern Candlelight — Baolai Kiln Wood-Fired Craft Brand Exhibition · Liugui, Kaohsiung

This was a small-scale but densely meaningful project. Baolai Kiln is a wood-fired ceramics studio in Liugui, Kaohsiung. Wood-firing is an extremely time- and labor-intensive technique — every piece carries the heat of the kiln and the character of its materials, and can never be replicated.

What we wanted to achieve with this exhibition was simple: let a craftsperson who might otherwise only be known locally be recognized by more people — and recognized in the way he deserves.

The value of a small-scale exhibition is not in exposure numbers, but in letting one person be seen in the way he deserves.

Contemporary Art

Fiber Art Festival:
A philosophy of materials

Taichung Fiber Arts Museum — 2026 Fiber Art Festival Curation

The Taichung City Government's Cultural Affairs Bureau commissioned Howdy Creative for this project. Fiber is a uniquely versatile craft material — it exists in the most everyday fabric and in the most avant-garde works of contemporary art alike.

The curatorial challenge of the Fiber Art Festival was to let these two worlds meet in the same exhibition space, rather than talk past each other.

The best curation lets the everyday and the avant-garde see each other within the same space.

An exhibition is a form of design built to last.

Craft Curation:
Four Dimensions

When Howdy Creative curates exhibitions, we hold one private conviction: a good exhibition keeps affecting its audience long after they leave. Years later, they might see a piece of pottery at a market and suddenly recall something an exhibition once told them.

This lasting effect is the true goal of exhibition design. Not the foot traffic on opening day, not the media coverage at the launch, but the question that stays in the audience's memory.

FAQ · Frequently Asked Questions

About craft curation,
what you might want to know

What is the fundamental difference between craft exhibition curation and commercial exhibitions?

The core of craft exhibition curation is building an emotional connection between the audience and the craft itself, not simply displaying products. Commercial exhibitions focus on sales conversion, while craft exhibitions place greater weight on conveying the craftsperson's creative context, technical depth, and cultural background. In craft exhibition curation, Howdy Creative sets "letting craft be seen correctly" as the design goal — from the exhibition's narrative structure and spatial circulation to the wall text, everything is designed around helping the audience truly understand the value of the craft, not merely making the work look attractive.

What are the key steps in Howdy Creative's exhibition curation process?

Howdy Creative's exhibition curation process runs through five stages: (1) establishing the theme and narrative structure — clarifying the story the exhibition wants to tell and its target audience; (2) spatial planning and circulation design — ensuring the visitor experience flows smoothly and builds emotional layers; (3) visual identity system design — including the exhibition logo, colors, typography, and promotional materials; (4) on-site execution and construction — Howdy Creative maintains its own construction crew, integrating design and construction without gaps; (5) post-event evaluation and documentation — helping clients preserve the exhibition's outcomes as a brand asset. The entire process follows PMP project management standards to keep progress and quality under control.

How does exhibition space design strengthen a craft brand's market positioning?

The exhibition space is a craft brand's most immersive touchpoint. When Howdy Creative designs an exhibition space, we translate the craft brand's core value proposition into spatial language: material choices reflect the spirit of the craft (a woodworking exhibition, for example, uses raw wood elements), lighting design highlights the texture of the work, and the information system conveys process knowledge in an accessible way. Every detail visitors experience in the exhibition reinforces their perception of the craft brand. A successful craft exhibition leaves visitors remembering not only the work, but which brand gave them that experience.

How can Taiwanese craft brands increase market visibility through exhibitions?

The key for Taiwanese craft brands to increase market visibility through exhibitions is shifting their thinking to exhibition as marketing. Howdy Creative advises craft brands to treat exhibitions as an important platform for launching their brand story, not merely for displaying work. Concrete strategies include: partnering with spaces or institutions that have strong curatorial capability to raise media exposure; designing exhibition visuals that are shareable, so visitors want to post them on social media; and designing interactive experience zones so visitors can feel the craft-making process first-hand, forming a deeper memory. After the exhibition ends, Howdy Creative also helps brands turn exhibition content into digital content assets for long-term use.
