Howdy Creative's view on exhibition curation
HOWDY CREATIVE 2024–2026
A good exhibition keeps influencing its audience long after they leave.
Taiwan's craft energy is more than enough. What's missing is often a space that knows how to tell its story.
When Howdy Creative curates an exhibition, we don't just place objects in glass cases. What we do is find the underlying question behind every craft piece, then translate that question into a space visitors can feel the moment they walk in.
This ability to translate has been forged through our design practice since 2009. From brand identity to spatial storytelling, from vendor documents to opening-day experiences, curation is the stage where we bring everything together.
A good exhibition keeps influencing its audience long after they leave. Years later, they might see a piece of pottery at a market and suddenly recall what an exhibition once told them.
Taitung, Austronesia's
Crossroads
2024 Taitung Craft and Austronesian International Exchange Exhibition & Marketing Project
The Taitung County Government commissioned Howdy Creative to execute this project. Taitung's uniqueness lies in being the closest place in Taiwan to the Austronesian cultural sphere, where Indigenous craft traditions share deep historical ties with Austronesian peoples across the region.
Our approach starts from commonality: crafts from different peoples often face similar problems — how to work materials, how to make objects durable, how to make beauty part of daily life. From this angle, Taitung's craft and craft from other Austronesian regions gain real grounds for dialogue, rather than simply being displayed together as exotic curiosities in the same room.
Seventy Years of Craft:
A Brand Rediscovering Itself
National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute Brand Identity Enhancement Project
Seventy years is a milestone, and also a difficult design challenge: how do you make "seventy years" more than a number — how do you make it feel like an accumulation of warmth?
Our strategy was to use visual language to build historical depth — giving the craft vocabulary of every era its place, while keeping the overall identity feeling contemporary. A seventy-year brand shouldn't look old; it should look like it has substance.
In the Mountain Town of Liugui,
A Wood-Fired Kiln
Southern Candlelight: Baolai Kiln Wood-Fired Craft Brand Exhibition · Liugui, Kaohsiung
This was a small-scale but densely meaningful project. Baolai Kiln is a wood-fired pottery studio in Liugui, Kaohsiung. Wood firing is an extremely time- and labor-intensive craft; every piece carries the kiln's heat and the material's own character, and can never be replicated.
What we wanted to achieve with this exhibition was to let a craftsperson known perhaps only to locals be recognized by more people — and recognized in the way he deserves.
Fiber Art Festival:
The Philosophy of Material
Taichung Fiber Arts Museum 2026 Fiber Art Festival Curation
The Taichung City Government's Cultural Affairs Bureau commissioned Howdy Creative to execute this project. Fiber is a very special craft material — it exists both in the most everyday fabric and in the most avant-garde contemporary artworks.
The curatorial challenge of the Fiber Art Festival was giving these two worlds a chance to meet in the same exhibition space, rather than talking past each other.
Exhibition is a long-acting form of design.
Its influence truly begins the moment the audience walks out of the exhibition hall.
Four Dimensions of
Craft Curation
Howdy Creative curates with a personal conviction: a good exhibition keeps influencing its audience long after they leave. Years later, they might see a piece of pottery at a market and suddenly recall what an exhibition once told them.
This lasting effect is the real goal of exhibition design. Not the foot traffic on opening day, not the media coverage, but the question that stays in the audience's memory.

About craft curation,
what you might want to know
What is the essential difference between craft exhibition curation and commercial exhibitions?
The core of craft exhibition curation is building an emotional connection between the audience and the craft itself, rather than simply displaying goods. Commercial exhibitions focus on sales conversion, while craft exhibitions place greater weight on conveying the craftsperson's creative context, technical depth, and cultural background. In craft exhibition curation, Howdy Creative sets "letting craft be seen correctly" as the design goal — from the narrative structure and spatial circulation to the wording on interpretive panels, everything is designed around helping the audience truly understand the value of the craft, not just making the pieces look pretty.
What are the key steps in Howdy Creative's exhibition curation process?
Howdy Creative's exhibition curation process has five stages: (1) Establishing the theme and narrative structure — clarifying the story the exhibition will tell and its target audience; (2) Spatial planning and circulation design — ensuring the visitor experience flows smoothly with emotional pacing; (3) Visual identity system design — including the exhibition logo, colors, typography, and promotional materials; (4) On-site execution and construction — Howdy Creative has its own construction crew, seamlessly integrating design and build-out; (5) Post-event evaluation and documentation — helping clients preserve exhibition outcomes as brand assets. The entire process follows PMP project management standards, keeping schedule and quality under control.
How does exhibition space design strengthen a craft brand's market positioning?
The exhibition space is a craft brand's most immersive touchpoint. When Howdy Creative designs an exhibition space, we translate the craft brand's core value proposition into spatial language: material choices reflect the craft's spirit (such as using raw wood elements for a woodworking exhibition), lighting design highlights the texture of the works, and the interpretive system conveys process knowledge in an accessible way. Every detail the audience feels in the exhibition reinforces their perception of the craft brand. A successful craft exhibition leaves the audience remembering not just the pieces, but which brand gave them that experience.
How can Taiwanese craft brands boost market visibility through exhibitions?
The key for Taiwanese craft brands to boost market visibility through exhibitions is shifting their thinking to "exhibition as marketing." Howdy Creative recommends craft brands treat exhibitions as an important platform for releasing their brand story, not just for displaying works. Concrete strategies include: partnering with spaces or institutions that have curatorial capacity to boost media exposure; designing exhibition visuals that are shareable, so audiences want to post them on social media; and designing interactive experience zones that let audiences feel the craft-making process firsthand, forming deep memories. After the exhibition ends, Howdy Creative also helps brands turn the exhibition content into digital content assets for long-term use.
